Ubaldini Castle Museum

Il Museo

The Ubaldini Castle, a fortress from the renaissance period located in the centre of the little town of Sassocorvaro, sits on a hill that dominates the whole valley of the River Foglia and is part of a complex defensive structure for the Montefeltro Duchy.
It was built in and around 1475, from designs by Sienese architect, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, military architect and engineer in the employ of Federico da Montefeltro. During the Second World War, it was chosen by Pasquale Rotondi, Superintendent for Fine Arts in the Marches, to protect numerous masterpieces against becoming damaged in the war. The Castle still contains a rich collection of art works from private collections and some of the most important religious buildings in Sassocorvaro and surroundings. The memory of Rotondi’s operation to save the art works during the Second World War and the story of the Rotondi Award for Art Saviours, founded in 1997 going on to become national in 2009, can be seen in a multimedia info device.
