Cathedral

The imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the 15th century and then rebuilt in Neo-classical style in the late 18th century by architect Giuseppe Valadier.

The cathedral is a genuine treasure trove of paintings, sculptures and liturgical decorations that are some of the most important examples of Urbino’s art from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The apse chapels are true cameos, decorated with gilded stucco work and paintings by artists from the by artists from the school of Federico Barocci, who created his absolute masterpiece, the Last Supper (1590-1599) for the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament.
